I also want to say that Shoujo manga are not criticized as much as shonen manga because they are not even close to their popularity. A good shonen should be something you can show to everybody. Just because they're catering to a specific audience does not mean they should shut it off for other audiences. You could say that they are appeasing the market so it isn't fair to criticize them for that, but Gintama and FMA sold just fine. People are criticizing Shonen because they can make a powerful and well written female character, but choose not to. ![]() #Worst shonen jummp female protagonist free#FMA and Gintama managed to break free of the mold, and make some well written main characters. I don't think it's fair to say that because it's part of a genre, you can't criticize it for something. I've seen this criticism for years and years and it's virtue signaling at best and stupidity at worse. Aot, Naruto, My Hero, One Piece, Bleach, and Demon Slayer are all shonen written for teenage boys, all have female cast members who either don't do anything of significance or are waifu material, all have super-powered battles, and popular shonen such as Haikyuu are about sports. The most popular anime are all shonen so it gets the most hate and criticism. #Worst shonen jummp female protagonist movie#That wolf guy has his shirt off for most of the movie and the vampire guy is tall, rich, and good looking. Books that are written by female authors such as Twilight also do the same thing. The males are all husbando material, the MC's are almost always female, the plots almost always revolve around romance since that's what girls like and the female mc's are usually overpowered to fulfill that power fantasy. #Worst shonen jummp female protagonist series#I've read some Shoujo manga and those series treat their male characters the same way shonen treats their female characters. But, my criticism is of the hypocrisy, not the treatment of these fictional female characters. I dislike how lots of One Piece fans criticize Naruto's female cast while acting as if One Piece's female cast is better. What do most shonen have? Girls who are all waifus, sports, superpowered fights, and fights that use video game logic. 13-year-old Japanese boys don't care about "strong, empowered female characters", they care about hanging out with their male friends, tits, video games, cool superpowered fights, and sports. Can you read and enjoy them? Yes, but they're written specifically to appeal to that demographic. This isn't meant to be offensive, it's just the truth. ![]() If you're not a heterosexual male between the ages of 12 and 18, shonen manga isn't for you. You lose by adding your western bias into your critique and you lose by expecting these mangas to appeal to you in the first place. The moment you add modern-day, progressive gender politics to battle shonen written in a non-western culture you lose. I've made jokes about Oda's female character designs before and I've made fun of Naruto's female cast but they're just jokes, not some criticism about "the sexism of battle shonen'. ![]()
